Synopsis
Only when you are lost can you truly find yourself
Raimund Gregorius, having saved a beautiful Portuguese woman from leaping to her death, stumbles upon a mesmerizing book by a Portuguese author, which compels him to suddenly abandon the boring life he has led for years and to embark on an enthralling adventure. In search of the author, Gregorius acts as detective, pulling together pieces of a puzzle that involves political and emotional intrigue and the highest possible stakes. His voyage is one that transcends time and space, delving into the realms of history, medicine and love, all in search of true meaning to his life.

Minus half star because in the 2 hours of the movie passed in Portugal, less than 10 words were spoken in portuguese.
Like a portuguese would say "Bloody idiot" to someone in the middle of the road instead of "Sai da frente, caralho -

I saw Romancing the Stone for my Romantic Comedy class that I took my final semester as an undergrad. I remember very specifically (mostly because I misused a word that I won't recount here) a discussion that I had in that class about some character who is killed in that film only in service of the story. They existed for no other purpose than the slaughter really.
I'm sure it wasn't that moment that changed how I was looking at film. I had to be lead to that point, and afterward, what was expressed in a general form then became a fuller, deeper and more detailed philosophy. But I remember that feeling clearly, of distaste toward what this film had…

Bille August is an interesting filmmaker. He made one absolute classic in the early 1990s, The Best Intentions, based on a script by Ingmar Bergman. It is such a great film, I would recommend anyone checking it out. However, his career has not always been so illustrious. He has made some interesting films, Pelle the Conqueror; and a number of dull ones. But since The Best Intentions I will always make time for his films.
Night Train to Lisbon is based on the well-respected Pascal Mercier novel of the same name. And has a pan-European cast of some note - Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Bruno Ganz, Charlotte Rampling, Melanie Laurent, Martina Gedeck, Lena Olin, Tom Courtenay, August Diehl and Christopher…

Having a story that is quite interesting and drama that is quite solid doesn't make this movie could stand out. Actually starting from the opening, this movie feels quite promising. Also with beautiful cinematography and views of the city of Lisbon and Switzerland (That's what i like the most in this movie). But after that, it went flat. It cannot bind the audiences to enjoy or maybe even continue the movie to the end. I didn't find it interesting till the end. Well, there were some points that I could enjoy, tho. Plus, Jeremy Irons is amazing. The other casts also did a great job. But I dunno, it feels like it lost its soul.

Impressive ensemble cast in an international mystery story that gets progressively less interesting the more we find out.

Review by Brad Henderson ★★★ 3
A fairly underwhelming political romance film that falls flat after a pretty good opening.
Jeremy Irons an arrogant Professor gets himself caught up when he witnessed an attempted suicide by a lady wearing a red coat on a bridge in Bern, Switzerland. He ends up in Lisbon because of a famous hard to find book found in this intriguing ladies red coat. Jeremy Irons gives up everything to find answers.
Most of these answers are completely boring and end up a bit of a waste of time
Won’t give away any spoilers
